What is LGBT+ History Month?
If you're not aware already, February marks the beginning of LGBT+ History Month 2021 in the United Kingdom. The annual month long observation is a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community whilst raising further awareness of the issues faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender people alongside other identities within LGBTQ+.
LGBT+ History Month aims to put LGBTQ+ people back into the history books by highlighting that not only have they been present within society, but they have also provided vital contributions to human progress, whether or not their status has been acknowledged officially or historically.
LGBT History Month is a time to combat homophobia, transphobia, biphobia and other forms of prejudice whilst also celebrating and learning about members of the LGBTQ+ community and the impact they've had on both LGBTQ+ people and everybody around the world.
History LGBT+ History Month?
LGBT+ History Month is a month-long annual celebration and remembrance of LGBTQ+ history. It looks at the history of gay rights which are closely related to other civil rights movements with the core aim to promote both equality and diversity.
LGBT History+ Month was originally observed back in the United States in 1994 as a result of Black history month. It was founded by high school teacher Rodney Wilson who while teaching Nazis revealed he was gay and told them that it was something that he could have been killed for.
LGBT+ History Month has now been observed since 2005 within the United Kingdom and every year it has its own theme with this year the them being 'Body, Mind, Spirit' which will become a school subject for schools up and down the country to spread further awareness and inclusion with our youth.
Signs of Progress for LGBTQ+ Rights
Since the early beginnings, the LGBTQ+ community and their allies have had a huge positive impact within the past 100 years. With so many positive changes in the history of LGBTQ+ rights, we've put together some of the most noticeable and welcomed changes to UK law and regulations which have paved the way for not only a more inclusive country but a world as a whole!
With so many more adaptations to laws and regulations within both the United Kingdom and the rest of the world, their is a visible and significant increase with the acceptance and adoption of LGBTQ+ rights and history as we constantly strive to create a more inclusive and loving world for all.
