Research conducted by University Compare delved into over 40 student cities across Britain to determine the most LGBTQ+-friendly locales.
The study assessed factors such as the size of the queer population, availability of local social groups and clubs, interest in the city’s annual Pride event, and instances of recorded LGBTQ+ hate crimes.
Topping the list as the most welcoming city for LGBTQ+ students was London, the capital of the UK. Following closely behind was Brighton in Sussex, ranked second overall, although it scored slightly lower in terms of safety.
Among the other cities recognized for their LGBTQ+ inclusivity were Cambridge, Manchester, Edinburgh, Oxford, Nottingham, Bristol, Bournemouth, and Liverpool.

A spokesperson from University Compare emphasized the importance of considering a city’s inclusivity when choosing a university, asserting that every student deserves an environment where they can be their authentic selves.
In a similar vein, a study conducted by real estate website Clever in the US assessed cities based on LGBTQ+ metrics, including queer population, availability of gender-affirming healthcare providers, legislation affecting the trans community, Pride events, laws concerning LGBTQ+ issues, and the presence of LGBTQ+ venues.
Notably, San Francisco emerged as the top-ranked city in the US study, hailed as a welcoming and diverse haven. The city’s vibrant LGBTQ+ nightlife and culture, coupled with inclusive laws, contributed to its reputation as a vibrant hotspot for LGBTQ+ individuals.
