If you’re an avid Instagram user you may already be well aware, however for those who do not engage with the social media platform that much you may have missed Instagram’s latest update!
This article looks briefly into the the new feature from Instagram and why all of us here at Joshua Lloyd welcome the update with open arms in a change to provide much needed further inclusivity.
Instagram Pronouns
The update see’s the inclusion of pronouns in your bio allowing you to add up to four particular pronouns by following a few simple steps. If you’re unsure about what pronouns are, you can read more within our International Pronouns Day blog!
Positive Step Forward
This latest update by Instagram takes a huge step forward to inclusivity and something we here at Joshua Lloyd welcome with open arms! The step forward mirrors what LinkedIn provided a while back and highlights that social media companies are finally realising the importance of further inclusivity!
For those who do not identify with any set pronouns this update may not seem to big of a deal, however there are numerous reasons as to why this update provides further inclusivity and positivity:
Safe Space
Through highlighting your own pronouns within your social media, it sends out the message that you are not going to assume others gender as you state your own pronouns you identify to.
Destigmatisation
With the inclusion of pronouns within social media platforms, it’s a step forward in setting great precedent whilst also destigmatising discussions regarding gender. It is vital that other industries move towards this genuine inclusivity within their workplaces, schools, social circles and beyond.
Reduces Misgendering
With the adoption of visible pronouns, this latest update by Instagram will limit the possibility of misgendering somebody which can make them feel invalid, dismissed, disrespected and/or hurt.
Limitations
Although great news to many, there are limitations to the update which Instagram have stated they will be improving it with a form available to have a pronoun added if it’s not already available.
Adding Pronouns to Your Instagram Bio
Luckily, Instagram have made the ability to add pronouns to your bio simple! To go ahead and apply your pronouns, simply follow the steps below:
- Update your Instagram app
- Go to your profile
- Select “Edit Profile”
- Press the new pronouns button
- add up to four pronouns
- Press “Done”
