We all love a good fact, especially those we probably didn’t know! We’ve trawled through the internet to bring you twenty random interestingly short, weird and cool facts about the LGBTQ+ community including some facts which date back into the history of pride.

  1. The oldest known pornography dating back over 3,000 years features male/male, female/female and male/female couples.


  1. A billionaire from Honk Kong offered £50 million to any man that could woo and marry his lesbian daughter… would you believe that it didn’t work!


  1. In the early 17th century in London, there was a gay brothel situated where Buckingham Palace is today. Wonder if the Queen knows?


  1. In the 1985 film Back To The Future, there was a scene deleted where Marty tells Doc that he’s scared that hitting his mother could make him gay. We don’t know how?


  1. The word ‘drag’ is supposedly an acronym for a stage direction coined by Shakespeare and his contemporaries meaning ‘Dressed Resembling A Girl’. YAAAS Shakespeare!


  1. Up until the late 1400s, the word ‘girl’ only had meaning for a child of either sex. Male children were referred to as ‘knave girls’ whereas females were known as ‘gay girls’. 


  1. In 1962, American rock guitarist, singer and songwriter Jimmy Hendrix pretended to be gay in order to get out of the army.


  1. It wasn’t until 1982, that the Gay Related Immune Disorder (GRID) was renamed Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).

  1. The first celebrity to publicly come out as openly gay was American Actor and interior designer William Haines way back in 1933. Go Billy! 


  1. There are now approximately 1 million children within the US who are currently being raised by same-sex couples. And we bet they’re having great lives!
