What Does Bear Mean in LGBTQ+?
In relation to the LGBTQ+ community, bear is a subcultural term used primarily by gay male individuals, referring to a subset of men who embrace and subvert masculinity and defy the stereotypes typically applied to gay men, who are often seen as feminine due to their attraction to other males.
Bear culture is associated with the rural gay community with regard to the idea of rugged traditional masculinity is considered both an ideal and defiance of gay stereotyping that often portrays gay men as overwhelmingly thin, well-groomed and averse to physical exertion.
Bear Pride Flag
Also known as the International Bear Brotherhood Flag, the bear pride flag is designed to represent the bear subculture within the LGBTQ+ community. The flag was created in 1996 by Craig Byrnes who was an undergraduate studying psychology. The bear pride flag is flown high around the world at pride events to showcase support and pride for the bear community.
Colours Of The Bear Pride Flag
The bear pride flag consists of seven equally sized horizontal stripes with a paw print on the upper left hand side of the flag. The colours from top down; dark brown, orange/rust, golden yellow, tan, white, grey and black are to include the colours of furs of animal bears internationally. Although the flag does not necessarily refer to human skin colour, the flag was originally designed with inclusion in mind.

Whilst expanding our bear pride collection, we're in the process of creating a clothing line dedicated to those who identify as a bear with artwork created utilising the colours of the bear pride flag.
